Award Winning Pianist, Matthew Bengtson, to Compete in French International Piano
Competition
Philadelphia, PA - (February 20, 2004) - Pianist Matthew Bengtson will compete with 39
other participants in the 6th Orleans International Piano Competition of 20th Century Music
in Orleans, France, March 8-17, 2004. First prize is 8000 Euros ($10,000) with total prize
money approximating $45,000.
The competition consists of three rounds. In Round One, Mr. Bengtson will perform Drei
Klavierstücke, op. 11 by Arnold Schönberg, Alexander Scriabin’s Sonata no. 8,
Etudes by Claude Debussy and Gyorgy Ligeti, and Sonata One by Matt Monticchio. Mr. Monticchio is
a composer from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
In Round Two, Mr. Bengtson will play the Sonata no. 1 by Pierre Boulez, four Encores by
Luciano Berio, four Preludes by Maurice Ohana, Karol Szymanowski’s Sheherazade, a piece
by Qigang Chen, and Sonata no. 3 by Paul Hindemith. In Round Three he will play the Second Piano
Quintet by Gabriel Fauré, and Choral’s Dream by Thierry Escaich.
Mr. Bengtson has won numberous national and international piano awards and fellowships. He serves
on the faculty of the Settlement Music School and staff of the Curtis Institute of Music, both in
Philadelphia. He competes in chess; he is a FIDE master (FM) and National Master (NM) and a winner
of the Midland Open, a Grand Prix tournament in England. He has also won several amateur golf
tournaments and sports a 2 handicap.
