Nation’s capital next stop for local pianist Matthew Bengtson
Pianist Matthew Bengtson will be appearing in concert at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. on April 23, 2003, 7:30 p.m. The occasion is the Fontainebleau Alumni Association Concert, in which Mr. Bengtson will perform the Mozart Sonata for two pianos with pianist Carol Wong; and the Ravel Trio with Tomoko Katsura, violin, and Eric Phelps, cello.
This is Mr. Bengtson’s third appearance in at the French Embassy. The
last couple of months have seen his performance circuit include stops in
Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York and Kansas. Last December, he made his
third recital appearance at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.
Mr. Bengtson recently competed in the Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev
International Competition. He will also contend as well in the highly
prestigious Honens International Piano Competition as part of the competition’s preliminary round on April 27.
A winner of numerous international and national piano awards and
fellowships, Mr. Bengtson attended the École Américaine at Fontainebleau,
where he studied a variety of French piano and chamber music and was awarded the Prix de la Ville de Fontainebleau for piano performance.
Mr. Bengtson serves on the faculty of Settlement Music School in
Philadelphia and the piano staff of the Curtis Institute of Music. He also
competes in chess and golf. A FIDE master (FM) and National Master (NM), he
competes internationally with some of the world’s finest chess masters and
last summer won the Midland Open in England. He has also won several amateur golf tournaments and has a 3 handicap.
